I hadn’t posted anything about this sooner for fear of jinxing it, but I went to a hiring fair at my school a couple of weeks ago determined to convince some restaurant that I was highly suited for their front-of-house staff despite my not having worked in a restaurant for 10+ years. (And for those of you who do know the one restaurant I previously worked in, it’s not exactly the sort of place that one would tout on one’s resume when trying to break into upscale dining in NYC.)
A couple of places bit, actually. Where I lack in impressive restaurant resume’-ness, apparently I make up in quick-talking enthusiasm. This afternoon I had a second interview at Blue Smoke (part of the Danny Meyer empire in NYC) and they offered me a server assistant position. I start on Wednesday! Blue Smoke (http://bluesmoke.com/blue/index.html) is on the casual side of his restaurant scheme – a jazz a BBQ joint – but highly regarded for food and service, and this poises me for making my way to the back of house in one of his kitchens (Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park) once I finish culinary school.
Once I’m up and running I’d love to have people come in and visit! I’ll keep you posted.
By the way I’m also moving to Brooklyn this week, so apologies in advance if the blog gets a little sparse… I’ll do my best.
